Polish Level 3

Course Description

Level 3 Classes: this course is suitable for people who have completed Levels 1 and 2 or who already possess a basic knowledge of Polish and wish to further develop their communication skills. It covers vocabulary and grammar related to talking about one’s family, describing leisure activities, and expressing preferences. By the end of the course, you will be able to communicate effectively in everyday professional, family, and social situations; understand and produce both formal and informal texts such as emails, invitations, and short messages; and demonstrate a solid level of oral comprehension. You will also enrich your knowledge of Polish culture and further develop accurate pronunciation skills. 

This class covers themes from the second half of the A1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).* 

Term duration: 10 weekly classes, Tuesday evenings, 18:15 - 20:15

Communicative themes may include:  

• naming and describing one’s family members - Mój ojciec ma 45 lat i jest lekarzem. Moja siostra lubi muzykę

• writing a private email - Cześć Aniu, dziękuję za wiadomość. Pozdrawiam, Kasia

• expressing interests - Interesuję się fotografią i podróżami. 

• talking about sports and physical activities - Gram w piłkę nożną. Chodzę na basen

• talking about time and schedules - Karol pracuje od ósmej do czwartej

• describing one’s daily routine - Stefan budzi się o 7:00 i wstaje o 7:05

Pronunciation and cultural knowledge:

• differentiating Polish consonants – e.g., ź, ż, z; dzi, dź, dź

• emblematic Polish artists – e.g., Jan Matejko, Józef Chełmoński, Zofia Stryjeńska 

• Polish traditions and holidays – e.g., Sobótka, Dzień Dziecka, Święto Konstytucji 

Key grammatical points covered may include:  

• verb-based preference structures e.g. Lubię…, Podoba mi się… 

• adverbs of frequency and the question jak często? e.g. często, rzadko, zawsze 

• verbs of motion: iść / chodzić, jechać / jeździć 

• present tense verb conjugation e.g. W tym roku studiuję w Szczecinie. 

• prepositions with nouns e.g. z kolegą, w domu, na uniwersytecie, do pracy 

• ordinal numbers used in dates and sequences e.g. pierwszy, drugi, trzeci 

Please note that we adapt the pace of the class to the needs and interests of the group, so the listed themes and grammar may be subject to change and are not meant to be exhaustive. 

Homework may be set between classes, though we do understand that the constraints of everyday life may make it difficult to complete at times. You are under no obligation to complete the homework, but revision of the weekly lessons is strongly encouraged to allow you to make excellent progress and benefit fully from the course. 

Each week you will practice most if not all four communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). You will be encouraged to take an active part in all activities which can include games, pair and group work as well as individual tasks. We aim to establish a friendly, inclusive atmosphere in the classroom so that all students can express themselves freely and increase their confidence. 

*CEFR levels indicated on our level descriptors are not a guarantee that you can take the State Certificate Examination in Polish as a Foreign Language (Państwowy Egzamin Certyfikatowy z Języka Polskiego jako Obcego) for this level. There is an accredited exam centre at the Polish Social & Cultural Association in London and the certification level required for citizenship is B1. If you would like to take the certification exam, please speak to your tutor to discuss what they think would be most appropriate.
