Course Description

Level 3 Classes: 

This course is suitable for people who have completed Levels 1 and 2 or who already possess a basic knowledge of Polish and wish to further develop their communication skills. It covers vocabulary and grammar related to talking about one’s family, describing leisure activities, finding one’s way around the city, and expressing preferences. By the end of the course, you will be able to communicate effectively in everyday professional, family, and social situations; understand and produce both formal and informal texts such as emails, invitations, and short messages; and demonstrate a solid level of oral comprehension. You will also enrich your knowledge of Polish culture and further develop accurate pronunciation skills.

This class starts covering themes from the A2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).*

Term duration: 10 weekly classes, Tuesday evenings, 18:15 - 20:15

Communicative themes may include:

·         Naming and describing one’s family members
Mój ojciec ma 45 lat i jest lekarzem. Moja siostra lubi muzykę.

·         Writing a private email
Cześć Aniu, dziękuję za wiadomość. Pozdrawiam, Kasia.

·         Expressing interests
Interesuję się fotografią i podróżami.

·         Talking about sports and physical activities
Gram w piłkę nożną. Chodzę na basen.

·         Locating places in the city
Apteka jest naprzeciwko banku.

·         Talking about food product categories
Kupuję warzywa, owoce i nabiał.

 

Pronunciation and cultural knowledge

·         Differentiating Polish consonants – e.g., ź, ż, z; dzi, dź, dź

·         Polish landmarks typical of major cities – e.g., Pałac Kultury, Zamek na Wawelu

·         Famous Polish people – e.g., Fryderyk Chopin, Wisława Szymborska, Robert Lewandowski

 

Key grammatical points covered include:

·         Verb-based preference structures
e.g.
Lubię…, Podoba mi się…

·         Adverbs of frequency and the question jak często?
e.g.
często, rzadko, zawsze

·         Verbs of motion: iść / chodzić, jechać / jeździć

·         Adjectives describing physical appearance
e.g.
wysoki, niski, blond

·         Present and past tense verb conjugation

·         e.g. W zeszłym roku pracowałam w Krakowie. Dzisiaj studiuję w Szczecinie.

·         Prepositions with nouns
e.g.
z kolegą, w domu, na uniwersytecie, do pracy

·         Ordinal numbers used in dates and sequences
e.g.
pierwszy, drugi, trzeci
