Being able to communicate effectively is a core clinical skill for all professionals who have regular patient contact and, as part of that role, are required to gather or give information, break bad news or support patients to make and understand decisions related to their care and treatment. The link between effective communication skills and the delivery of high-quality care as well as staff resilience has been highlighted in both the research literature and a number of successive national reports. This two-day evidence-based course has been developed by a group of leading communication researchers and trainers and is aimed at doctors, nurses and senior healthcare professionals (band 6 & above) wishing to enhance their clinical communication skills with patients, carers, or colleagues. Participants set the agenda for both days by identifying challenging communication situations they experience at work. These challenges are recreated with actors playing different roles such as a patient, family member or colleague for participants to practice key skills and principles, receive constructive feedback and test out alternative strategies. In previous courses key areas of challenge have included:

Genetics and GenomicsDescriptionThis CPD study day has been designed for Midwives. Over the course of the day learning will focus on: The core concepts of genetics and genomics How to recognise genomic red flags Maternal inherited conditions and how they can impact on pregnancy and birth The role of the midwife in prenatal screening and diagnosis An overview of applications to practice and the future of genomics in maternity services. Genomics is included in the NMC standards of proficiency for midwives. In addition, genetic testing is becoming increasingly prevalent and more accessible in healthcare. It is important that midwives are competent and confident to be able to advise and support women and their families in genomic conversations. It is therefore imperative that midwives understand genetics and genomics to improve equity of access and positive patient outcomes.
Signalong TrainingDescriptionSignalong is a commonly used sign language which uses a series of hand shapes, position and movement alongside speech to aid understanding and develop communication. Signalong is designed to complement speech using a key-word system, meaning that you don’t have to sign every word in a sentence, and it is slower in pace. It uses speech, sign, body language, facial expression, and voice tone to reference the link between sign and word. Based upon British Sign Language and with its foundation in Makaton, it is widely understood amongst sign language users. No sign language experience is necessary, this is a foundation level course. Our courses offer an informal, supportive, and fun leaning opportunity with small class sizes to ensure a personal approach with the flexibility to meet the needs and aspirations of the group.
