Arabic Level 2

Course Description

Level 2 Classes: this course is suitable for people who have completed level 1 or are comfortable with level 1 objectives such as being able to greet people, ask/answer basic questions, and being able to recognise Arabic letters and decode simple syllable patterns.  At the end of this level, you will be able to talk about yourself and immediate environment in a little more detail, ask and answer questions in transactional situations. You will have a better grasp of the Arabic alphabet in all positions and will have discovered other cultural aspects of countries where Arabic is spoken such as greetings, personal space or handshaking.  

Term duration:  9x classes, Wednesday evenings, 6:15pm to 8:30pm.

Please note: your last class will finish at 8:15pm. 

Communicative themes may include:  

• Describing oneself, one’s family and immediate environment in short sentences with support, or in written forms 

• Expressing basic needs, likes, and dislikes 

• Asking and responding to simple transactional questions (on topics such as prices, the time, a location…) 

• Talking about seasons and describing the weather  

• Learning and using colours  

Listening and pronunciation objectives may include: 

• Reading words without full vocalisation for familiar vocabulary 

• Recognising shadda, tanwīn, and alif maqṣūra 

• Begining to recognise common word patterns (root and pattern system awareness) 

• Understanding short, simple utterances on familiar topics when speech is slow and clearly articulated, identifying key information (numbers, names, places). 

Grammatical and script-reading/writing objectives may include: 

• Understanding the Arabic alphabet in all positions  

• Using the present-tense verbs in simple constructions (I study, I work, I live) 

• Using demonstratives (this/that) and possessive suffixes (my, your) 

• Identifying high-frequency function words (this, that, in, from, and) 

• 13 forms of personal pronouns  

• Basic sentence structure (verb + subject + object) and negation with ما and لا  

• Question words (ما، من، أين، متى، كيف، كم، لماذا)  

• Location expressions (أمام، خلف، بجانب) and place prepositions  

• Using basic punctuation and spacing conventions 

Please note that we adapt the pace of the class to the needs and interests of the group, so the listed objectives may be subject to change and are not meant to be exhaustive. 

Homework may be set between classes, though we do understand that the constraints of everyday life may make it difficult to complete at times. You are under no obligation to complete the homework, but revision of the weekly lessons is strongly encouraged to allow you to make excellent progress and benefit fully from the course. 

Each week you will practice most if not all four communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). You will be encouraged to take an active part in all activities which can include games, pair and group work as well as individual tasks. We aim to establish a friendly, inclusive atmosphere in the classroom so that all students can express themselves freely and increase their confidence.
