Course Description

Level 4 Classes: This course suits people who have recently completed Level 3 or have acquired a level of language which means they can, for example, communicate simply about themselves and about a few past experiences,  and express simple future plans (see level 3 key communicative and grammatical points for more detail). In this class, you will develop your confidence to be able to tackle more situations when abroad or in conversation with a Spanish speaker. In Level 4, we will work at the A2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).   

Term duration 10 x weekly 2-hour classes, Thursday evenings, 6:15pm to 8:15pm

Communicative themes may include: 

  • Talking about a past trip: Giving and asking for information about a trip taken in the past. Describing where you went, how you travelled, where you stayed, and what you did. 
  • Talking about biographies and life milestones: Talking about famous people’s lives and describing key events in your own life s. Understanding and producing short biographical narratives including dates and numbers over 100. 
  • Describing people in the past: Describing what people were like, what they looked like, and what they used to do. Asking and answering questions about the personalities, appearances, and habits of people in the past. 
  • Talking about historical periods: Expressing opinions and sharing basic information about different historical periods. Describing typical customs or habits from the past and explain personal views about those times. 
  • Explaining causes and past circumstances: Explaining and understanding the reasons behind events or situations that happened in the past 
  • Telling a story in the past: Understanding and telling a simple, coherent story such as a children’s tale or a past anecdote. Being able to recount a basic sequence of events. 

Key grammatical points covered may include: 

 

  • Pretérito indefinido (for completed past actions):  El año pasado viajé a Granada. 
  • Travel-related verbs in pretérito indefinido (e.g., irse, alojarse, visitar):   Nos alojamos en un hotel pequeño.
  • Sequencing connectors (primero, después, luego, al final):  Primero fuimos al museo y luego comimos en un restaurante típico.  
  • Vocabulary and verbs related to life events in pretérito indefinido (nacer, casarse, morir):  Frida Kahlo nació en 1907. 
  • Use of numbers over 100:  Pablo Picasso murió a los noventa y un años.
  • Pretérito imperfecto (for descriptions, routines, and background information in the past):  Cuando era niño, jugaba en la calle todos los días.  
  • Verb soler in present and imperfect (to express habits):  Solemos cenar tarde en España. / Cuando vivía en Sevilla, solía ir al mercado los sábados. 
  • Cause-effect connectors (porque, como, así que): Como hacía buen tiempo, salimos a pasear. 
  • Storytelling connectors (entonces, de repente, al final):  Entonces, el lobo se acercó a la casa
  • Introduction of the future simple tense to discuss plans and projects.
