Course Description

Level 5: This course suits people who have recently completed Level 4, or those who already have a solid foundation in German, communicating confidently about themselves, their environment, their past, and their future plans. In Level 5, you will gain confidence in communicating about topics that go beyond your immediate environment, for example, by giving a voluntary presentation on a topic of your choice in front of the class. This is not compulsory. 

In Level 5, we will work at the intersection of the A2 and the B1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*). 

Term duration 10 x weekly 2-hour classes, Tuesday evenings, 6:15pm to 8:15pm

Key Language 

Communicative themes may cover: 

  • At the department store 

  • Buying clothing, describing what a person is wearing 

  • Shopping in Germany, Grocery shopping 

  • Nutrition and diet, discussing favourite dishes  

  • Current events 

  • Agreeing and disagreeing, expressing opinion  

  • Expressing speculations  

  • Household chores 

  • German swearwords and phrases 

  • Feature film screening and subsequent discussion 

 Key grammatical points covered may include: 

  • Revision of adjectival declension – e.g. Er trägt eine grüne Hose und einen gelben Schal. 

  • Consolidation of Perfekt and Imperfekt past tenses 

  • Consolidation of complex sentences and sentence connectors 

  • Consolidation of subjunctive Konjunktiv II for expressing wishes and requests, and for making suggestions – e.g. Du könntest mich morgen mal besuchen. 

  • Consolidation of Dativ and Akkusativ noun cases – e.g. Ich habe meinem Bruder einen Hammer gekauft. Das Buch ist auf dem Tisch, aber ich lege es jetzt neben das Bett. 

  • Relative clauses – e.g. Ein Gericht, das ich gerne esse, ist Spätzle. 

 CEFR levels indicated on our level descriptors are not a guarantee that you can take the associated German exam for this level. If you would like to take an external German exam, for instance the Goethe-Zertifikat A2 (there is an exam centre in London), please speak to your tutor to discuss what they think would be most appropriate.
