Course Description

 

Level 3 Classes: This course is suitable for people who feel comfortable with what is covered in Levels 1 and 2. You will already be able to communicate simple, basic needs, use familiar everyday expressions, and talk in a very simple way about yourself, using the present tense, and becoming more confident in using the Perfekt spoken past tense. By the end of this course, you will be able to express some of your past experiences, compare options, and express simple future plans.  

In Level 3, we work at the A2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)*. 

Summer term duration: 10 x 2 hour classes, Monday evenings, 6:15pm to 8:15pm


Key Language

Communicative themes may cover: 

  • Talking about past activities, leisure time, and sports activities 

  • Revision of giving directions and describing locations 

  • Talking about birthdays and presents received 

  • Making an invitation and reacting to it 

  • The human body and health – appointment at the doctor’s 

  • Idiomatic language: Interjections – e.g. Ach! Boah! Igitt! Pfui!   

  • Travel – destinations, means of transport, travel accessories, own travel plans, wishes for trips 

  • German traditions  

  • German language poetry 

  • Current events 

 

Key grammatical points may include: 

  • Revision of Perfekt, the spoken past tense – e.g. Gestern bin ich ins Kino gegangen. Ich habe meine Freundin getroffen.  

  • Revision of Imperfekt past tense for the verbs “haben”, “sein”, and the modal verbs – e.g. ich hatte, du warst, er durfte/konnte/musste/sollte/wollte 

  • Consolidation of Dativ and Akkusativ noun cases 

  • Personal pronouns in the Dativ and Akkusativ – e.g. ich, mir, mich; er, ihm, ihn;  

  • Sentence conntectors – e.g. und, aber, oder, denn, weil, etc. 

  • Complex sentences and word order 

  • Adjectives in the Positive, the Comparative, and the Superlative – e.g. schön, schöner, am schönsten 

  • Prepositions – e.g. an, auf, bei, durch, für, gegen, in, mit, etc. 

  • Subjunctive Konjunktiv II for wishes and polite requests– e.g. Ich würde gern ins Kino gehen. Könnten Sie mir helfen, bitte? 

  • Modal particles – e.g. doch, ja, bloß, etc. 

CEFR levels indicated on our level descriptors are not a guarantee that you can take the associated German exam for this level. If you would like to take an external German exam, for instance the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (there is an exam centre in London), please speak to your tutor to discuss what they think would be most appropriate.
