Course Description

Level 2 Classes: This course is suitable for people who are comfortable with what is covered in Level 1 (such as: giving basic personal information about yourself, being able to use verbs in the present tense). By the end of this class, you should be able to communicate simple, basic needs, to use familiar everyday expressions, and to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and is prepared to help.

In Level 2, we work at the A1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)*.

Term duration 10 x weekly  classes, Thursday evenings, 18:15 - 20:15

Communicative themes may include:

  • Talking about daily routine and leisure time – e.g. Um sieben Uhr stehe ich auf. Am Nachmittag spiele ich Fußball.

  • Ordering food and drink – e.g. Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee und ein Stück Kuchen.

  • Finding your way around a city: asking for and giving directions

– e.g. Entschuldigung, bitte, wie komme ich zum Supermarkt? / Gehen Sie hier geradeaus und dann rechts.

  • Describing a room – e.g. Das Bett steht neben dem Fenster.

  • Arranging to meet up – e.g. Ich möchte ins Kino gehen. Kommst du mit?

  • Interjections – e.g. Boah! Ach so! Igitt!

  • Swear words – e.g. Mist!

Key grammatical points may include:

  • Revision of verbs in the present tense – e.g. ich trinke, du nimmst, er isst.

  • Revision of the accusative noun case – e.g. Ich trinke einen Kaffee.

  • Revision of separable verbs – e.g. Sie kommt nicht mit.

  • Revision of modal verbs – e.g. Wir können morgen nicht kommen.

  • Sentence connectors – e.g. und, aber, denn, weil, ...

  • Word order

  • Prepositions – e.g. an, auf, neben, unter, ...

  • Where at+Dative / where to+Accusative – e.g. Das Buch ist auf dem Tisch. / Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch.

  • Introduction to Perfekt spoken past tense – e.g. Ich bin gestern in die Stadt gefahren. / Gestern habe ich eine Freundin getroffen.

  • Introduction of Imperfekt past tense – e.g. Gestern war ich zu Hause. Ich hatte viel Zeit für mich.

Please note that we adapt the pace of the class to the needs and interests of the group, so the listed themes and grammar may be subject to change and are not meant to be exhaustive.

Homework may be set between classes, though we do understand that constraints of everyday life may make it difficult to complete the task. You are under no obligation to complete the homework, but revision of the weekly lessons is strongly encouraged to allow you to make excellent progress and to benefit fully from the course.

Each week you will practise most if not all four communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). You will be encouraged to take an active part in all activities, including games, pair and group work as well as individual tasks. We aim to establish a friendly, inclusive atmosphere in the classroom so that all course participants can express themselves freely and increase their confidence in language use.

*CEFR levels indicated on our level descriptors are not a guarantee that you can take the associated German exam for this level. If you would like to take an external German exam, for instance the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (there is an exam centre in London), please speak to your tutor to discuss what they think would be most appropriate.
