Course Description

Level 3 Classes: This course is suitable for people who feel comfortable with what is covered in Levels 1 and 2. You will already be able to communicate simple, basic needs, use familiar everyday expressions and talk in a very simple way about yourself, using the present tense. By the end of this course, you will be able to express some of your past experiences. In Level 3, we will work at the A2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).   

Term duration: 10x weekly classes, Monday evenings, 6:15pm to 8:15pm

Communicative themes may include: 

  • Making and rejecting plans: Proposing plans and making arrangements with others. Accepting or politely rejecting invitations. 
  • Expressing likes and preferences: Giving and asking for information about personal tastes and preferences. Expressing agreement or disagreement about common leisure activities or plans. 
  • Expressing interests, opinions, and discomfort.
  • Expressing obligations and prohibitions: Understanding and giving simple instructions, rules, and obligations in various contexts. 
  • Talking about actions completed earlier today. Relating those actions to adequate temporal markers. 
  • Talking about completed and pending tasks: Explaining which tasks have already been completed and which have not. Talking about simple to-do lists or daily responsibilities. 
  • Talking about life experiences: Talking about personal experiences and asking others about theirs. Understanding and producing simple conversations about things done at some point in one’s life (e.g., travel, events, cultural experiences). 

 

Key grammatical points covered may include: 

 

  • Verb quedar in the present tense (to make plans): ¿Quedamos mañana para cenar?
  • Verbs gustar, encantar, preferir in the present tense (to express preferences):  Me encanta la música en directo. 
  • Inclusive discourse markers también / tampoco (to agree/disagree politely):  A mí también me gusta el cine.
  • Verbs interesar, molestar, parecer in the present tense (to express opinions and discomfort):   A mí me molesta el ruido por la noche. 
  • Emphatic structures to highlight personal opinion:  A mí me parece una buena idea.  
  • Personal and impersonal obligation structures hay que/tienes que/debes + infinitive (to express general rules or advice):   Hay que reciclar el plástico.  
  • Verb poder in personal and impersonal forms (to express permission or possibility): Se puede entrar con mascotas.  
  • Pretérito perfecto (present perfect) for recent or completed actions:   He hecho la compra esta mañana.  
  • Adverbs ya / todavía no with the pretérito perfecto (to talk about completed or pending tasks): Ya he terminado el informe. Todavía no he llamado a Marta.  
  • Introduction of the pretérito indefinido (for completed past actions):  El año pasado viajé a Granada.
