Course Description

Level 1 Classes: This course is suitable for people with no prior knowledge of the language, who would like to begin to communicate in Spanish. By the end of the course, you will be able to formulate simple statements and questions in an everyday setting and understand the most basic written and spoken language.

In Level 1, we will work at the A1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*).   

 

Term duration: 10x weekly 2 hour classes, Tuesday evenings, 18:15 - 20:15

 

Communicative themes may include: 

 

·         Introducing Oneself and Others: Giving and requesting personal information such as name, surname, age, occupation, nationality, contact info. Providing the same information about others. Spelling and writing this information clearly. 

·         Greetings and Social Conventions: Using appropriate greetings and farewells in a variety of social situations and at different times of the day or year. Demonstrating awareness of basic social norms and greetings in Spanish-speaking cultures. 

·         Describing Daily Routines and Leisure Activities: Talking and writing about one’s daily activities and hobbies. Asking others about their routines and free time. Using common time expressions and days of the week to situate actions in time. 

·         Telling and Asking for the Time: Asking for and telling the time using simple expressions. Relating time to common daily actions and schedules. 

·         Describing Places and Giving Locations: Describing one’s home, neighbourhood, or city using basic spatial expressions. Giving and understanding simple information about the location of people, places, and objects. 

 

 Key grammatical points covered may include:

 

  • Present tense of regular and most common verbs: Yo hablo español.
  • Present tense of common irregular verbs: Yo soy estudiante.
  • Subject pronouns: Yo estudio.
  • Basic question formation: ¿Por qué estudias español?
  • Simple negation: No hablo inglés.
  • Possessive adjectives: Mi barrio es grande.
  • Definite and indefinite articles: El libro, un perro.
  • Numbers (1–100): Tengo veinte años. Son las ocho.
  • Basic prepositions of place and time: Voy a la escuela a las ocho.
  • Expressions of time: Los lunes estudio español.
  • Simple descriptions using adjectives:  El supermercado es caro.
  • Spelling and pronunciation: Mi nombre es Ana. Se escribe A-N-A.
