Level 4 classes: this course suits people who have recently completed Level 3 or have acquired a level of language which means they can, for example, communicate simply about themselves , talk and write about what they do every day, and what they used to do, and can compare options (see level 3 key communicative and grammatical points for more detail). In this class, you will develop your confidence to be able to tackle more situations when abroad or speaking to a Greekperson.
In Level 4 we work at the A2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)*.
Term duration 10 x weekly 2-hour classes, Tuesday evenings, 6:15pm to 8:15pm.
Please note: no class on Tuesday 27 Oct.
Communicative themes may cover:
Talking about health (book medical appointments, discuss common illnesses, symptomatology, body parts, follow medical advice)
Making plans while staying with a Greek host (look for activities, sightseeing, entertainment, book tickets etc).
Going on a road trip (interacting at the petrol station, fuel, simple maintenance)
Describing weather conditions
Talking about a significant life event of the past (graduation, wedding, rescuing a pet etc)
Inviting friends, accepting and rejecting invitations
Discussing about the Greek culture in simple ways (historical significance, mentality, cuisine etc)
Key grammatical points may include:
Future simple tense: e.g. Θα φάμε γεμιστά αύριο; (Will we eat stuffed veggies tomorrow?)
Past simple tense: e.g. Χθες πήγα στην τράπεζα στις 9 το πρωί (Yesterday, I went to the bank at 9 in the morning)
Simple imperative mode: e.g. Μην έρθεις πριν τις 5 το απόγευμα (Don't come before 5 in the afternoon)
Simple relative pronouns: e.g. Η Ελένη, που μένει στον πρώτο, είναι γιατρός (Helen, who lives in the first floor, is a doctor)
Subordinate adverb clause (syntax): e.g. Θέλω να πάω στον οδοντίατρο γιατί έχω πονόδοντο (I want to go to the dentist because I have a toothache)
Please note that we adapt the pace of the class to the needs and interests of the group, so the listed themes and grammar may be subject to change and are not meant to be exhaustive.
Homework may be set between classes, though we do understand that the constraints of everyday life may make it difficult to complete at times. You are under no obligation to complete the homework, but revision of the weekly lessons is strongly encouraged to allow you to make excellent progress and benefit fully from the course.
Each week you will practise most if not all four communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). You will be encouraged to take an active part in all activities which can include games, pair and group work as well as individual tasks. We aim to establish a friendly, inclusive atmosphere in the classroom so that all students can express themselves freely and increase their confidence.
