Level 1 Classes: This course is suitable for people with no prior knowledge of the language, who would like to begin to communicate in Greek, particularly in a holiday context. By the end of the course, you will be able to formulate simple statements and questions in an everyday setting and understand the most basic written and spoken language.

In Level 1 we work at the A1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)*.

Term duration 10 x weekly classes, Monday evenings, 6:15pm to 8:15pm

Communicative themes may include:

  • Being able to read in the Greek Alphabet and count.

  • Providing and understanding basic personal information: Greeting people, introducing yourself and your family and friends, where you live, where you are from, your nationality, work, your phone number, languages you speak. Eliciting the same information from a Greek speaker.

  • Talking about food: Shopping for food, naming common shops, quantities, asking for prices. Making sense of a menu, attracting the attention of the waiter, ordering food and drinks, asking for and paying the bill.

  • Inviting someone for a drink or a meal, accepting invitations.

Key grammatical points may include:

  • Articles: e.g. Θα ήθελα έναν καφέ παρακαλώ (I would like a coffee please)

  • Nouns: e.g. Ο μουσακάς είναι νόστιμος (Moussaka is tasty)

  • Αdjectives: e.g. Ο μουσακάς είναι νόστιμος (Moussaka is tasty)

  • Possesive pronouns: e.g. Το τηλέφωνό μου είναι 123456789 (My phone number is 123456789)

  • The use of nominative case: e.g. Ο μπαμπάς αγαπάει την κόρη του (Dad loves his daughter)

  • The use of accusative case: e.g. Ο μπαμπάς αγαπάει την κόρη του (Dad loves his daughter)

  • Present tense of verbs: e.g. Πίνω γάλα κάθε πρωί  (I drink milk every morning)

  • Prepositions: E.g. Η τράπεζα είναι στο κέντρο (The bank is in the centre)

CEFR levels indicated on our level descriptors are not a guarantee that you can take the associated Greek exam for this level. If you would like to take an external Greek exam, please speak to your tutor to discuss what they think would be most appropriate
