Course Description

Level 1 Classes: This course is suitable for people with no prior knowledge of the language, who would like to begin to communicate in French, particularly in a holiday context. By the end of the course, you will be able to formulate simple statements and questions in an everyday setting and understand the most basic written and spoken language. In Level 1, we will work at the A1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Term duration: 10 x weekly 2-hour classes, Wednesday evenings, 6:15pm to 8:15pm.

Communicative themes may include:

·        Providing and understanding basic personal information: Greeting people, introducing yourself and your family and friends, where you live, where you are from, work, nationality and languages spoken. Eliciting similar information from a French speaker.

·        Talking or writing about food: Shopping for food, saying what you like and need, making sense of a menu to order food and drinks.

·        Inviting someone for a meal to go out. Accepting and refusing invitations.

·        Talking and writing about activities (hobbies, sports, and daily activities).

·        Being able to spell and count.

Key grammatical points covered may include:

·        Present tense 1 (regular and most common verbs. E.g. Nous travaillons le jeudi)

·        Adjectives (1) E.g. Une belle photo

·        Formulating questions and negative sentences. E.g. Est-ce que tu parles français ? Non, je ne parle pas français)

·        Expressing belonging (1) E.g. ma maison, ton sac…

·        Articles. E.g. une baguette, la table, du café

·        Quantity and intensity adverbs E.g. Elle est très gentille

·        Pronominal verbs E.g. Tu te brosses les dents

·        Prepositions with places E.g. à/de Norwich)

See uealanguageprogramme.org for more information

*The CEFR levels indicated on our level descriptors are not a guarantee that you can take the associated DELF exam (Diplôme en Language Française) for this level. If you would like to take the DELF (there is an exam centre in Cambridge), please speak to your tutor to discuss what they think would be most appropriate.
