Course Description

Level 2 Classes: This course is suitable for people who are comfortable with what is covered in Level 1 (such as: giving basic personal information about yourself, being able to use regular and very common verbs in the present tense). By the end of this class, you should be able to communicate simple, basic needs, use familiar everyday expressions and interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and is prepared to help. You will also be able to talk about what you are doing now and your plans.

In Level 2, we work at the A1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)*.

Term duration: 9 x weekly classes, Tuesday evenings, 18:15 - 20:30

No class Tuesday 28 October. Your last class will finish at 20:15

Communicative themes may include:

  • Talking about your daily routine.

  • Describing your work and asking others about their work.

  • Thanking someone and responding to thanks

  • More about food and drink including likes and dislikes

  • Finding your way: understanding and giving directions (on foot or by car)

  • Talking and asking about plans for travel and holidays

  • Making and cancelling appointments

Key grammatical points may include:

  • Present continuous forms (e.g., ik zit te denken & ik ben aan het denken)

  • Basic future tense using gaan and zullen (ik zal haar vertellen)

  • Diminutives (e.g. - boek -> boekje)

  • Introduction to a few past tense constructions (e.g. ik ben geboren).

  • Word order in subordinate clauses (e.g. ik denk dat hij gek is)

  • Introducing the particle ‘er’ (e.g. er is een boom in de tuin, ik heb er drie)

*CEFR levels indicated on our level descriptors are not a guarantee that you can take the associated CNaVT exam (Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal) for this level. If you would like to take the CNaVT (there is an exam centre at UCL in London – the first level is A2), please speak to your tutor to discuss what they think would be most appropriate.
