Course Description

Level 1 Classes: This course is suitable for people with no prior knowledge of the language, who would like to begin to communicate in Dutch, particularly in a holiday context. By the end of the course, you will be able to formulate simple statements and questions in an everyday setting and understand the most basic written and spoken language.  

In Level 1, we work at the A1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)*. 

Term duration: 10x weekly classes, Wednesday evenings, 18:15 - 20:15 

Communicative themes may include:  

  • Asking for and providing basic personal information: greeting people, introducing yourself and your family and friends, where you live, where you are from, work, nationality and languages spoken. Eliciting similar information from a Dutch speaker.
  • Developing written skills: learning how to fill in a simple form, to write a short email and a 
    short social media message.
  • Talking or writing about food: shopping for food, saying what you like and need, making 
    sense of a menu to order food and drinks. 
  • Talking about birthdays: telling friends when your birthday is, asking when their birthdays 
    are, and inviting them to a birthday party. 
  • Accepting and refusing invitations, including agreeing on a date and time
  • Asking and telling the time and date.  
  • Talking and writing about activities (hobbies, sports, and daily activities).  
  • Being able to spell and count.  

Key grammatical points covered may include:  

  • Present tense 1 (regular and most common verbs. (e.g. ik woon in Norwich) 
  • Present tense modal verbs, (e.g. Ik wil koffie drinken)
  • Adjectives (1) (e.g. een mooie foto)
  • Formulating questions and negative sentences. (e.g. Spreek jij Nederlands? Nee, ik spreek 
    geen Nederlands.)
  • Expressing belonging (e.g. mijn huis, jouw boek) 
  • Articles (e.g. een huis, de kat, het boek)
  • Quantity and intensity adverbs (e.g. Ik ben heel moe)
  • Reflexive verbs (e.g. Ik was me)
  • Separable verbs (e.g. Ik sta op) 

*CEFR levels indicated on our level descriptors are not a guarantee that you can take the associated CNaVT exam (Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal) for this level. If you would like to take the CNaVT (there is an exam centre at UCL in London – the first level is A2), please speak to your tutor to discuss what they think would be most appropriate.
