This course covers the following areas based on the document ‘National Minimum standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training of Healthcare Support Workers’ (Public Health England 2015) and the Covid 19 Vaccination Programme Slide Set (UK Health Security Agency, last updated December 2021) This is an assessed course with a written and oral assessment to ensure a satisfactory level of knowledge, at the end of the second day.

How vaccines work

 

Vaccine policy

How UK policy is produced and implemented

Current policy for Flu and Covid-19 vaccines

Importance of taking a full immunisation history 

 

Legal Issues

How to obtain consent for immunisations 

Providing vaccines under Patient Specific Directives and Protocols

Documentation

 

Administration of the vaccines

Ensuring correct vaccine is given to correct recipient and actions to take if patient is excluded for any reason

Routes of administration including safe Injection Technique and Nasal administration

 

Finding and using Resources

Identify how to access:

  • The Green Book including: 
  • Vaccine information for patients and parents

 

Vaccine storage and delivery

Understanding how to store vaccines safely and prevent wastage

Identify strategies to improve uptake of immunisations
