Course Description

Level 6 Classes: This course will suit people who have recently completed Level 5 or have a solid/recent foundation in Spanish meaning they are able to confidently communicate about themselves, their environment, past, future plans and some topics beyond their own environment. In this class, you will be given tools to justify your opinion in simple ways, such as justifying actions or plans. In Level 6, we will work at the B1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).   

Term duration 10 x weekly 2-hour classes, Tuesday evenings, 6:15pm to 8:15pm

Communicative themes may include: 

• Giving and defending opinions: Expressing and justifying opinions in a debate or informal discussion. Being able to agree or disagree with others politely and defend their point of view.

• Expressing evaluations and personal judgments: Expressing personal or general value judgments about a range of topics, evaluating ideas or behaviours during discussions or debates. 

• Making basic hypotheses and speculations about present and past event: such as strange or unusual situations or unresolved mysteries. Making predictions about social or current issues, and informal predictions about personal or imaginary futures (e.g. horoscopes). Expressing probability and possibility in present or future contexts. 

• Making polite requests related to immediate needs or common classroom/social situations, using appropriate courtesy expressions to ask for help or favours with tact. 

• Giving and asking for advice: Asking for and giving advice in various contexts, including travel, lifestyle, or personal problems.  

 

Key grammatical points covered may include: 

• Negative opinion + subjunctive:  No creo que eso sea verdad. Structures for agreement and disagreement:  Estoy de acuerdo contigo, pero creo que no es tan simple.  
• Impersonal expressions + subjunctive (value judgments):  Es importante que cuidemos el medioambiente. 

• Subjunctive + expressions of doubt (to make predictions):  Es posible que haya cambios sociales importantes. 

• Perfect subjunctive (for recent past speculation):  Puede que haya pasado algo grave. 
• Structures for possibility and hypothesis (e.g. quizás, puede que, es posible que + subjunctive):  Quizás estén perdidos.  

• Simple future (predictions or assumptions):  Mañana lloverá en el norte. 

• Compound future (speculation about the present):  Ahora estarán llegando al aeropuerto.  
• Simple conditional (polite requests and advice):  ¿Podrías ayudarme con este ejercicio? Yo hablaría con ella primero. 

• First conditional (real future possibilities and hypothetical advice):  Si estudias más, aprobarás el examen. Si tuviera más tiempo, iría contigo.

• Imperfect subjunctive (used with polite or hypothetical expressions):  Si fuera tú, no lo haría.
