Course Description

Level 4 Classes: 
This course suits learners who have recently completed Chinese Level 3  or have achieved a level equivalent to HSK Standard Course 2 (Lessons 1–7). Students at this level can already communicate simply about themselves, their daily life, and basic past experiences. In this course, you will consolidate and extend your knowledge by studying the second half of the HSK Standard Course 2 (Lessons 8–15), which means that: you will understand and produce more complex sentences in spoken Chinese, be more confident in everyday situations, or when expressing opinions and describing experiences, and have broadened your knowledge of modern Chinese culture and daily life. 
 
Term Duration: 9×  weekly classes, Tuesday evenings, 18:15 - 20:15 (your last class will finish at 20:15)

Communicative themes may cover: 

• Talking about plans and decisions. 
• Describing people, feelings, and health. 
• Making comparisons and giving reasons. 
• Talking about weather and clothing. 
• Expressing likes, preferences, and suggestions. 
• Describing jobs, places, and events. 
• Talking about past experiences and ongoing actions. 
• Making polite requests and invitations. 
• Expressing uncertainty or future intentions. 
• Talking about holidays and festivals in China. 

Key grammatical points covered may include: 

• Verb complements (e.g. 看到, 听懂, 做完). 
• Resultative and directional complements. 
• Comparative structures with 比, 更, 最. 
• The structure 是…的 to describe past actions. 
• Use of 着 for continuous states. 
• Use of 了 for change and completion. 
• Time expressions and sequential structures (先…再…). 
• The particle 吧 for polite suggestions. 
• Modifiers with 的, 地, 得. 
• Question forms using 怎么, 为什么, 哪个, etc. 

Note that we adapt the pace of the class to the needs and interests of the group, so the listed themes and grammar may be subject to change and are not meant to be exhaustive. 

Class Approach 

Each week you will practise all four communicative skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. (Writing in Chinese at this level will focus on understanding the structure of characters, recognizing radicals, able to write common simple Hanzi.) 
You will be encouraged to participate actively through: 
• Pair and group work 
• Role-plays and short dialogues 
• Games and interactive tasks 
• Writing and pronunciation practice 
 
We aim to create a friendly and inclusive learning environment to help you speak with confidence and enjoy learning Chinese. 

Homework may be set between classes to consolidate vocabulary and grammar, but it is optional. 
Revision of each week’s content is strongly encouraged to support steady progress.
