Description

CAN A RIVER HAVE RIGHTS? A RIVER WALK AND DIALOGUE
With Sophie Docker, Specialist Facilitator and Mediator, and Johann Don Daniel, artist

In recent weeks, two stories have hit the national news regarding the rights of rivers: the first recognising the rights of the River Ouse in Sussex, followed by a similar declaration for the chalk streams of Hampshire.  Closer to home, there have been ongoing calls to award Freedom of the City to the River Wensum.  So what does it mean to think of a river having personhood, or rights?  Is this a useful way to advocate and collectively care for our own Norfolk Rivers?

This session will combine a walk to the stretch of the River Yare that runs behind the Sainsbury Centre with artist, Johann Don-Daniel, where we’ll focus on the voice of the river and our most authentic responses to it.  This will be combined with a dialogue facilitated by Sophie Docker, an expert in Nonviolent Communication.  Following the principles of speaking from the heart and deep listening without judgement, the aim is to illuminate the subject of how best to care for our rivers and identify cooperative pathways towards positive action.

About Johann Don Daniel

Johann is predominantly a sound / 4D artist interested in sonic sculpture/materiality, manipulating sound distorting technologies, drums/beat narrative and performance.  His current focus is through ethnographic research into the exploration of traditional skills/languages that have been affected by colonial legacies. He uses these to develop a dialogue reflecting decolonialisation and neo-colonialism. The outcomes of these include the use of various experimental technologies and sound distortion, combined with sculpture and a beat driven narrative.

About Sophie Docker

Sophie is committed to exploring how she can walk herself and the communities and systems she participates in out of separation, polarisation and violence into connection, liberation and interdependence.  Passionate about working with conflict as a driver for change she works with groups, communities and organisations facilitating dialogue and supporting individual and systemic transformation.
