Top Girls

FinePrint theatre, in association with the University of East Anglia are proud to announce our ‘Business is Business’ season: two fantastic plays in repertoire, looking at the price of success. Can we “have it all”? A fantasia about the beginning and, maybe, the end of Europe’s neoliberal experiment..

First, we travel back to the 1980s to the outset of Thatcher-led Britain in Caryl Churchill’s iconic ‘Top Girls’. Marlene is a successful business-woman managing Top Girls Recruitment Agency, but what sacrifices did she have to make to get there?

Then, in a gripping reimagining of Bertolt Brecht’s ‘The Good Person of Szechwan’; the good natured Shen Te goes from penniless prostitute to powerful business magnate – in a capitalist society, with the lure of profits and in the shadow of threatened conflict, how does anyone stay “good”?

These two uncannily prescient texts speak to each other and to our times now, more than ever!
