Understanding the cultural and ethnical background of learners allows those working with student on clinical placements to develop strategies that allow the facilitation of effective learning and also develops staff awareness of the individual needs of the learners and to be culturally responsive

This study day will help those supporting learners from different demographic backgrounds to meet their learning outcomes.

Sessions will cover the following subjects and will also utilise vignettes of student real life experiences. Action Learning sets will also be utilised in relation to educational student scenarios.

Course Description

- Defining cultural competence

- The value of diversity and being culturally “self-aware”.

- Cultural interaction and developing cultural awareness.

- Identifying models to utilise when planning placements for students from a culturally diverse background.

 

Session content:

Defining cultural competence (examples from across the cultural spectrum)
The BAME student experience - the evidence base (including vignettes from students)
Unconscious bias - the influences good and bad
What’s the point! Challenging inactivity from employers /HEI and encouraging students to raise concerns
Developing resources for practice learning
Action learning sets/scenario work
Finding out information/Mandela model
Success stories
End of day/Q&A, Evaluation
