DescriptionTowards a Centre for Contemporary Poetry in the Archive is a pilot project funded by the Mellon Foundation at the British Archive for Contemporary Writing (BACW) at UEA between 2022 and 2023. The proposed Centre will have at its heart a pioneering collection of underrepresented poetries. Our approach to understanding and defining underrepresentation aims to be alert to cross-cutting forms of discrimination in British and Irish literary culture relating to class, gender and ability. We also aspire to critically value and promote innovative formal approaches to contemporary poetic composition – such as the conceptual, the visual, the performed and the digital – as well as the poetic use of dialects and creoles spoken by communities which have been historically marginalised in the UK and Ireland. Our one-day symposium at the University of East Anglia, Poetry, Representation and the Archive, will bring together researchers in these areas to discuss the kinds of question such a project raises. The symposium will be followed in the evening by a drinks reception and poetry readings to mark the launch of the archive of Sarah Maguire: feminist poet, critic, and founder of the Poetry Translation Centre. More InformationA Day Pass includes, a full day of panels with lunch and refreshments, as well as free parking. We're delighted to welcome Bhanu Kapil as our keynote speaker. Bhanu Kapil was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2022. Her most recent book, How To Wash A Heart, won the T.S. Eliot Prize and was a Poetry Book Society Choice. Kapil lives and writes in Cambridge, where she is a Fellow of Churchill College. The recipient of a Windham-Campbell Prize and a Cholmondeley Award, both for poetry, she is the author of six full-length collections. Forthcoming from Prototype in 2023 is a new edition of her 2006 prose work, Incubation: A Space for Monsters. Following the symposium, we hope you will join us for the Sarah Maguire archive launch. Exhibition cases will display items from the Sarah Maguire archive with captions by UEA staff. There will be readings of poems by Sarah Maguire by UEA Poetry students, plus short speeches by one of Maguire’s executors and a representative of UEA/BACW. The full programme will be released in April. To help you plan, here are provisional timings for the day: 10am - Arrival and registration 12pm - Lunch 4:15pm - Keynote 5:00pm - Plenary and close 6:30pm - Sarah Maguire archive launch and drinks reception All timings above are subject to change.
